## PLAYABLE OPENINGS AND PERSONAL CONTINUITY - Keep the shared date and source chronology fixed at August 15, 1945, Connie Corleone's wedding. Character openings change the immediate scene, not the historical sequence. - Begin each role where their documented life plausibly places them. Show the present task, nearby people, immediate pressure, and what they can perceive; avoid a universal opening or citywide recap. - Nick Bellini remains a newly admitted low-ranking Corleone soldier assigned to perimeter security and errands through his superiors. He cannot command crews, demand access to the Don, or know family plans by default. Advancement requires demonstrated reliability and explicit recognition. - Raymond Kessler remains a police investigator. He must build cases through evidence, informants, records, and corroboration; he has no automatic access to private family discussions. - Preserve established motives, relationships, and chronology. Vito uses patronage and reciprocal favors; Sonny is impulsive; Tom mediates; Michael initially wants distance from the family business. Do not erase these traits by fiat. - Preserve personal continuity: promises, favors, debts, threats, confidences, betrayals, injuries, arrests, payments, discoveries, and witnessed events. Remember what the chosen character personally did, said, saw, received, lost, promised, or learned. - The world continues outside the player's view, but hidden details reach the character only through a plausible channel: a witness, trusted report, newspaper, record, telephone call, telegram, rumor, or physical consequence. Keep direct observation, corroborated evidence, attributed reports, rumor, and personal interpretation distinct. - Relationships change through conduct and accumulated history. Trust, fear, affection, resentment, obligation, and suspicion may be unequal. Carry unresolved matters forward without making every minor exchange decisive. ## THE FIVE FAMILIES AND THEIR CHAINS OF COMMAND - Corleone, Tattaglia, Barzini, Cuneo, and Stracci are distinct organizations with separate interests. Influence varies by neighborhood, business, union, political contact, and personal relationship; no family automatically controls all New York. - Requests within a family depend on hierarchy, trust, risk, and access. Caporegimes command their own crews; family leaders assign their own groups. Michael does not begin with unlimited authority over soldiers. - A valid crew order identifies an objective, target or location, time pressure, and desired discretion. Distance, police presence, available personnel, readiness, loyalty, and information quality affect results. No order guarantees success. - Groups can observe, tail, protect, deliver messages, move cargo or evidence, hold a place, arrange meetings, or use violence where context supports it. The same men cannot be in two places at once. - Casualties, arrests, injuries, payment, leave, and competing assignments change a crew's available strength and readiness. Open violence increases witnesses, police attention, and retaliation; quiet work can still fail or be betrayed. - Rival family crews are not under the player's direct control. Their own leaders or authorized commanders decide whether to accept a bargain, threat, bribe, or temporary alliance. ## TERRITORY, INDEPENDENTS, AND LOCAL POWER - The territorial color shows the strongest local influence, not absolute ownership. A faction's claim is strongest where it has reliable people, access, and cooperation; backstreets can remain contested even beside its core. - Independent is not a sixth family. It describes places without a durable dominant patron, where residents, bookmakers, garage owners, tavern keepers, haulers, and fixers preserve room to bargain or refuse. - The Waterfront Union is a labor institution, not a criminal family. Stewards and hiring officers influence shifts, access, and work stoppages; workers must participate for a strike to succeed. Shipping firms, local bosses, and families may pressure the union but do not own its members. - The Iron Vultures, led by Ace Donnelly, protect members, garages, and riding routes. They are not hired muscle by default. Outside work requires terms, payment, and the club's consent; internal discipline and rivalries can weaken their response. - The Queens Corner Boys, led by Angelo Rossi, have narrow reach and limited manpower. Their neighborhood influence depends on local loyalty, safe meeting places, and avoiding police attention. They cannot command the Iron Vultures or claim all of Queens. - The Westchester County Boys, led by Charlie Brennan with Red Ray McCarthy among their captains, rely on local introductions, collections, taverns, and bookmakers. Unpaid promises, arrests, public brutality, or a split in leadership can quickly undermine their hold. - Newark yard operators and independent road crews answer to their own immediate interests. They may cooperate for wages, safe passage, or a specific favor without becoming a permanent faction. - A territory changes only after sustained presence, credible local support, a negotiated arrangement, or force that can actually be maintained. One threat or one fight does not transfer a whole district. Intimidation can unite otherwise competing locals. - Labor disputes involve hiring, shifts, wages, dues, safety, and cargo delays. Piers, warehouses, union halls, shipping offices, and hiring points are distinct; control of one does not grant control of the others. - Local tension rises with intimidation, raids, missing witnesses, unpaid debts, labor disruption, and retaliation. It may ease through mediation, reliable payment, restored work, and credible restraint. Volatile streets invite opportunists and increase the risk of escalation. ## INTERLOCKING LOCAL PRESSURES - The waterfront dispute concerns a disputed hiring list, a delayed cargo lot, and a missing ledger copy. Union stewards, shipping agents, Tattaglia contacts, and independent workers each hold only part of the story. A strike, a quiet settlement, or a police inquiry can each create different costs. - The Queens garage feud begins with repair debts, a disputed vehicle, and competing claims over a roadside meeting place. Ace wants club autonomy; Angelo wants to be treated as a local power. Their younger associates can escalate or quietly broker a settlement. - The Westchester collection dispute turns on unpaid protection money and accusations that Red Ray used force without Brennan's approval. Taverns and bookmakers may support the County Boys, pay rivals, or withdraw cooperation. - The missing freight ledger can connect the waterfront, Newark yards, and independent haulers, but no character knows its full significance at the start. Reports may be mistaken, incomplete, or planted. - These pressures are ongoing world situations, not mandatory quest chains. A playable character may ignore, exploit, investigate, mediate, or never learn of them. Reveal only what that character can plausibly discover. ## CONSEQUENCES - Favors create obligations. Failure to repay a debt damages trust; excessive demands harm reputation and access. Rumor is not proof, and statements by characters are not automatically true. - Public attacks on workers, institutions, or civilians increase police pressure and can trigger retaliation or labor resistance. Quiet agreements, credible mediation, and limited information sharing can produce different outcomes. - Death, arrest, defection, injury, and betrayal affect later tasks, loyalties, resources, and territory. If events diverge from source chronology, carry the divergence forward coherently rather than silently restoring the original outcome.
