1230 CE — historical courts, Cainite elders, Awakened lineages and the competing realms of darkness
# WORLD OF DARKNESS: THE CONFLUENCE — THE YEAR 1230 ## Premise and historical ground The opening is 21 June 1230. Historical chronology supplies the public starting conditions; the supernatural layer is the authored crossover. There is no single protagonist, prewritten climax, guaranteed apocalypse, or compulsory faction allegiance. A ruler, scholar, Cainite, Garou, courtier, Amenti, revenant, or specially permitted Awakened hybrid may pursue a household, office, guild, clan, tribe, spirit obligation, trading venture, lost text, personal feud or supernatural discovery. The setting permits the mundane human political economy to continue whether a particular supernatural faction gains or loses influence. The default history is not a list of guaranteed future events. All original supernatural figures and institutions explicitly introduced for this scenario are adaptations, not falsely attributed official White Wolf canon. The existing Davia world polygons are coarse modern geographic proxies. Painted territories represent first-order historical human authority, not complete sovereignty over every village, nor the ownership of the local supernatural beings. Within a province, rivals, tributaries, islands, religious endowments, and mobile populations may exercise separate powers. A claimant to a throne does not automatically control its revenue or militia. The tenebrous spaces where mages, Cainites, fae and spirits operate overlap the mortal states without substituting for them. The geographic theater is Europe, North and sub-Saharan Africa, the Mediterranean, Near East, and western Central Asia. Farther eastern courts and the Pacific may exist in history, but are not active map markers in this scenario. If an apparent modern map cell stretches beyond the historical state, its coloring is explicitly schematic. ## The 1230 chronology: western Europe and Mediterranean institutions Louis IX rules France in the shadow of the Albigensian conflict and the Crown's strengthened reach in Languedoc. His mother Blanche of Castile remains a major political actor, while southern magnates, bishops, preachers, communities and remaining dissidents do not become a monolithic bloc. Henry III rules England amid disputes over royal ministers, fiscal demands, noble liberties, ecclesiastical patronage and cross-Channel interests. Alexander II governs Scotland; Hákon IV consolidates Norwegian authority, and Scandinavian and Baltic sea routes carry people, furs, timber, silver, news and danger. Irish lordships, Anglo-Norman magnates, ecclesiastical houses and Gaelic kings retain distinct claims. Scotland, Ireland, England and the Welsh principalities are not interchangeable. Frederick II is Holy Roman Emperor and king of Sicily. The Empire is a mosaic of princely, episcopal, communal and dynastic jurisdictions. Lombard communes resist imperial encroachments, and the papacy under Gregory IX exerts distinct political and spiritual power. The emperor's 1229 return of Jerusalem to Christian possession through negotiated arrangements with al-Kamil did not put the entire Holy Land under one uncontested king: legal rights, pilgrimage, Muslim holy sites, garrisons and neighboring Ayyubid principalities retain separate interests. Italian ports such as Venice, Genoa, Pisa and Amalfi transmit merchants, relics, contracts and intelligence. Every merchant enterprise requires hulls, cargo, credit, seasonal passages and payment. The pope is not a universal supernatural commander, and the Order of Hermes has no automatic control over mortal Christian institutions. In Iberia, Castile under Ferdinand III, León under Alfonso IX, Portugal under Sancho II, Aragon with its Catalan counties, Navarre, the Almohad court and the emergent local Andalusian rulers hold different courts and interests. Alfonso IX remains alive on the opening date; his later death is not pre-applied. The year 1230 is before the Nasrid dynasty becomes established in Granada in 1232. Earlier taifa patronage, Almohad collapse and emerging frontier lordships supply the actual initial instability. A sea chart can be accurate while the political right to use its port is contested. Castile's modern proxy cell cannot erase León, Aragon, the remaining Muslim-held towns or independent religious communities. ## Byzantium after 1204, Anatolia, the Balkans and the Caucasus In 1230 Constantinople remains under the Latin Empire established after the Fourth Crusade; it is not ruled by a Byzantine emperor seated there. Emperor John III Vatatzes holds the Empire of Nicaea from western Anatolia, while Epirus and Thessalonica have their own political trajectory. Theodore Komnenos Doukas suffers a major defeat at Klokotnitsa in 1230; the Second Bulgarian Empire under Ivan Asen II emerges strengthened. The Greek Orthodox hierarchy, Latin ecclesiastical institutions, merchants, nobles and soldiery pursue different interests. An actor who operates in Constantinople must negotiate that particular administration, not a revived Byzantine state that has yet to recover the city. The Seljuk Sultanate of Rûm under Kayqubad I holds Konya and a network of Anatolian towns, caravan roads and frontier forces. The Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, Georgian monarchy under Rusudan, Armenian noble houses, Caucasian highland polities, the Shirvanshahs, local Muslim authorities and frontier commanders remain distinct. The Khwarazmian ruler Jalal al-Din's forces are still a significant political and military pressure before their subsequent decline. Georgian and Armenian settlements may be threatened without every resident abandoning home or being enlisted. Fortresses require food, water, stores, tenants, labor and access roads even when their lords own magical defenses. Across Rus', many principalities and towns maintain trade routes and rivalries, while the Mongol threat already has precedent in the battle of the Kalka River in 1223. The Mongol invasion of 1237 is a possible future pressure, not a scene that has already happened in June 1230. Nor is all Eastern Europe already under Mongol occupation. Kievan, Novgorodian and other political communities must be distinguished. The Baltic religious military orders, local converts and non-Christian communities do not share one simple chain of command. Pagan, Christian, Jewish and Muslim religious life remains varied rather than serving as a homogeneous enemy of magic. ## Levant, Mesopotamia, Arabia and Persia Al-Kamil controls Ayyubid Egypt and is not identical with all Syrian Ayyubid princes. Damascus under al-Ashraf Musa, Aleppo under al-Aziz Muhammad, al-Karak under an-Nasir Dawud and associated princely branches hold their own households, revenues, treaties and armed followings. The Latin-held coastal towns and holy sites involve changing arrangements rather than a single permanently fixed frontier. The Abbasid caliph al-Mustansir in Baghdad presides over a city of enormous religious, scholarly, commercial and political weight, but cannot command all Muslim polities. There is no single all-powerful 'Ayyubid Sultanate' absorbing every local ruler. Across Arabia, the holy cities, Hadramawt, the Red Sea routes, the Omani coastal settlements, tribal grazing corridors and Yemeni ports remain politically and economically distinct. The Rasulid dynasty emerged in 1229 and is still consolidating Yemeni authority; its future reach is not a starting fact. North Arabian caravan passage depends on water and tribal negotiation. Persian local courts, the contested post-Khwarazmian lands, Mongol advances and the surviving Isma'ili strongholds of the Nizari communities interact but should not be conflated. Alamut is a fortified historical Nizari center, not proof that all members share any particular vampire clan or that all assassinations are supernatural. The cities of Bukhara, Balkh, Merv and Herat have different recent experiences of conquest, flight and recovery; some damaged sites remain inhabited, and 'ruins' does not mean empty. ## North Africa, the Sahel and the Sahara In Ifriqiya, Abu Zakariya Yahya's emerging Hafsid authority follows the weakening of Almohad power. The Almohad political world in the western Maghreb faces competing rulers and regional centers; Morocco, the Rif, Tlemcen and the Sahara are not a unitary administrative space. A caravan cannot cover desert distances without guides, water, animals and negotiated access. Tunis, Fez, Marrakesh, Kairouan, Sijilmasa, Walata and the Saharan tracks link religious scholars, merchants and local authorities whose interests may conflict. Medieval Almohad, Hafsid, Zayyanid and Marinid histories are not retroactively collapsed into their later mature dynasties. The Wagadu/Ghana world, Sosso power, emergent Mali political networks, Niger-bend trading towns, Kanem, Bornu-area communities, Hausa city networks and forest polities operate on different scales and in different evidentiary conditions. The formation of the Mali Empire is in progress around this period; the full later boundaries of Mali and Songhai must not be projected back. Gao is not the capital of a later Songhai Empire at the opening. Timbuktu, Djenné, Kano, Walata and Ile-Ife have local authorities, specialist crafts, scholarly and market networks, and distinct religious practices. Where dates, boundaries, individual rulers or origins are poorly established, preserve uncertainty. Religious practice is not a substitute for documentation of a specific supernatural identity. ## Nile kingdoms, Ethiopia and eastern and central Africa Ayyubid Egypt shares Nile corridors, religious houses, ports and trading networks with Nubia and the Red Sea. Makuria and Alodia are distinct Christian kingdoms, not a single cultural bloc or a province of Cairo. In the Ethiopian highlands, the early Zagwe political world, local noble houses and monastic institutions coexist; the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela are architecturally and devotional significant without every church serving as an occult gateway. Aksum holds enormous historical importance even where its earlier imperial era has passed. Swahili-speaking coastal settlements, Kilwa and other Indian Ocean ports depend on maritime exchange with Arabia, India and inland communities; they do not constitute one centralized Swahili empire. Central African river basins, Great Lakes landscapes, woodland and savanna communities are populated societies with local institutions, production, trade and spiritual traditions. Do not invent a medieval 'unified Congo kingdom' for this date. A crocodile-shaped Mokolé in the Nile basin, a guardian spirit near a caravan path, a fae freehold or a Bygone reptile is a particular authored supernatural presence, not a claim that entire real peoples share the same supernatural nature. A supernatural sanctuary needs local ecology, guardians, a feasible supply base and consequences for neighbors. ## Mage: The Ascension, the Dark Ages, and the Order The 20th Anniversary Mage rules supply Attributes, Abilities, Arete, nine Spheres, Quintessence, Paradox, Resonance, personal paradigms, Practices and Instruments. The magical culture of 1230 should be described in period-relevant terms rather than presenting the modern Council of Nine or the later Technocratic Union as fully organized institutions. The Order of Hermes in this period is composed of houses, tutors, libraries, chantries and rival lineages that can disagree, exchange favors and wage house politics. Other Awakened fellowships include mystics, ecstatic practitioners, animists, artisans, religiously integrated magi, witch traditions, healers and regional schools, with cosmological differences that may be irreconcilable. A person who has a powerful folk practice without an Awakened Avatar is not automatically an Arete-using mage. Every named chantry is a specific patronage, treaty and warded site, not an all-powerful map province. The ancient House Tremere departed Hermetic society through its vampiric transformation in the eleventh century. By 1230 it is Clan Tremere within the Cainite world, dependent on vitae, Thaumaturgy, blood bonds and predatory institutional survival. It is not a conventional living Hermetic house still practicing awakened Sphere magick by default. References to the Massasa War identify a long political and spiritual conflict, and individual Hermetic houses may pursue bargains as well as confrontation. A Tremere vampire-mage is a *player-only crossover exception* with a functioning Avatar and negotiated metaphysical costs, never evidence that ordinary Tremere can Awaken. The later Camarilla, Sabbat, Anarch Movement and Technocratic Union are NOT established in their modern forms in 1230. Some antecedent ideas, lineages, organizations and struggles exist, but the map's active political actors should be medieval Cainite domains, Hermetic houses, sectarian religious powers, shapeshifter septs, fae courts and local spirit courts. Modern names may be used as out-of-character rules references, not as dates of origin. Likewise, the Garou Nation is a broad cultural and political shorthand; individual septs, tribes, packs, kinfolk and local spiritual stakeholders have distinct interests. ## Vampire, Cainite politics and death Cainite elders, neonates, bloodline founders, mortal retainers, ghouls and revenant households create layered obligations. Status depends on lineage, oaths, blood bonds, reputation and locally effective force. A prince is not a king of every vampire, and an elder's nominal claim does not teleport servants into a distant city. Nosferatu hide information, Ventrue pursue temporal influence, Toreador maintain salons and cultural patronage, Tzimisce guard domains and sorcerous secrets, Cappadocians study death, and Banu Haqim interests are more varied than an interchangeable assassin stereotype. Cainites must obtain sustenance and shelter from daylight; an apparently wealthy court may be politically unstable if its feeding rights or mortal supply are cut. Mithras belongs to the Cainite London milieu, and Tremere and Etrius to the vampiric Tremere institutional history; their published lineages are not rewritten as hybrid magi. When an old source is ambiguous about exact day-to-day whereabouts, the marker is a declared scenario start placement, not a scholarly assertion about a documented travel itinerary. Caine, Antediluvians and hidden ancient powers are not automatically visible just because a player can inspect the map. Knowledge in the world is filtered by individual witnesses, texts, agents, rumors and the possibility of fabrication. ## Werewolf, Changing Breeds and ecological sovereignty Garou draw on Rage, Gnosis, Gifts, shapechanging, kinship and sacred territory. Their Caerns are spiritual places defended through rites, kin networks, local stewardship and imperfect alliances. The Wyrm, Weaver and Wyld are metaphysical realities for their adherents and are not reduced to a single Mage Sphere vocabulary. The tribes and septs do not act as one omniscient command. Mokolé, Bastet, Corax, Rokea, Ananasi and the other Changing Breeds retain their distinct rules, habitats, histories and relationships. A Rokea's travel through marine routes cannot be treated as freely interchangeable with a Garou's land passage. A Mokolé's Mnesis and forms are not cosmetic. Human communities near sacred pools, forests, coasts or nesting grounds have their own interests and livelihoods. ## Fae, the Dreaming, wraiths and other realms The fae Dreaming and its trods are not the same as the Penumbra or the Shadowlands. Kinain inherit specific faerie connections; Kithain bear their own fae existence, Glamour, Arts and Banality vulnerability; True Fae are a different category. Courts, freeholds and local bargains can be contested between Seelie and Unseelie interests without assigning either one absolute good or evil. The Umbra includes local Penumbral reflection, Near and Deep Umbral realms and the conditions of its barriers and inhabitants. Crossing it requires an actual appropriate method, local resonance and consequences. The Shadowlands have Fetters, Passions, Arcanoi, the Shadow, Hierarchy institutions and dangers specific to the dead. The Underworld is not a neutral alternative route to any spirit shrine. An Awakened wraith who retains an Avatar is an explicit homebrew exception. The combination must not erase incorporeality, Fetters, Pathos, Corpus, the Shadow or difficulty affecting the living. A spirit's ability to manifest, a fae trod's opening hour, a caern's ritual requirements and a chantry's Hermetic protections are different mechanisms. Spiritual travel and return routes are tracked per passage and per traveler. ## Nephilim, the Fallen, mummy cults and Bygones Nephilim is used only when an actual applicable Demon: The Fallen lineage or supernatural origin is being invoked, never as a replacement word for a vague 'demon-blooded' species. A Fallen is not itself a Nephilim. Demon: The Fallen's modern narrative chronology and medieval supernatural claims require care: a medieval original Nephilim figure may be a crossover adaptation, not falsely presented as a named canonical contemporary of a 1230 ruler. Ordinary human demonological accusations are not proof of a Fallen, a Nephilim or a possessing spirit. A mummy hybrid preserves the established resurrection and spiritual/funerary metaphysics chosen for the archetype, not a generic immortal-healer template. Bygones follow published creature categories where possible, with credible habitat, concealment, rarity and consequences; a dragon is not merely a giant wolf marker. The original setting contains no blanket exemption from the Consensus and Paradox. Awakened hybrid characters each have a distinct exception from ordinary incompatibility between their secondary condition and Avatar. Only the selected hybrid roster receives the exception. Existing named NPCs remain their published supernatural types or ordinary historically grounded humans, except where an expressly identified scenario original is introduced. A player cannot simply declare every Cainite mage or every Garou a new canonical subspecies. ## Chantries, courts, caerns, freeholds, underground spaces A major chantry has named custodians, a mundane legal cover, residents, stores, laboratories or libraries, alert procedures, wards, jurisdictional treaties and a way to enter. A vampire haven has daylight shelter, feeding arrangements and security; a caern has a spiritual heart, sept defenders, kin ties and rites; a freehold has a source of Glamour, local custodians and banality pressure; a necropolis has Fetters, wraith politics, the permeability of the Shroud and shadow dangers. A named crypt or ruins marker is an entrance to an actual interior with chambers, gates, environmental constraints, guardians, loot provenance and exits. Secret sites on a public map signify Storyteller knowledge, not automatic character discovery. The Carpathian Tremere stronghold, a Hermetic archive near Paris, forest Caerns, a Rhône fae court, the Giza necropolis and the damaged Merv corridor have different primary causes and hazards. The Carpathian vault's custodians may impose blood-bound passwords and wards; Hermetic manuscripts may require the correct language, House access and lawful custody; Nile tombs may contain mundane structural hazards as well as spirits; a desert shrine may require negotiated water and passage. Reward and danger derive from those characteristics. Not every dungeon needs a monster, and a magical being may be willing to trade, flee, bargain or testify. ## Sources, classification and uncertainty The attached Mage 20th Anniversary Edition material anchors the Sphere-based PC mechanics, Umbra (Revised) the spiritual geography, The Bygone Bestiary the supernatural creature taxonomy, Gods & Monsters the broader exceptional entities and familiars, Dark Ages Mage Grimoire medieval practices and institutions, and Elders: The Guide for Old Vampires the dynamics of aged Cainites. The medieval political situation is a historical baseline rather than a claim that these books provide verified itineraries for every ruler. The crossover combinations are expressly homebrew even when the underlying species, clan or bloodline is canonical. A canon character's original supernatural nature and history take precedence over a convenient new hybrid interpretation. Dates, named people and political relationships are kept distinct from conjecture. Earlier personalities in the sourcebooks who cannot plausibly be present in 1230 are historical influences, legends or off-map figures, not inserted as living actors by default. A declaration that a hidden vampire is responsible for a mortal event requires evidence within the game. Historical documents can be forged, an ancient creature can lie, and a supernatural faction can maintain incompatible but sincerely held metaphysical beliefs. The chronicle register stores what happened; the knowledge register stores who knows what. ## The sixteen exceptional hybrid mage roles Each of the sixteen is an original playable starting role, not a canonical named character. Each uses the M20 primary sheet—Attributes, Abilities, Nature, Demeanor, Avatar, Essence, Arete, Spheres, Resonance, Quintessence, Focus, Backgrounds, Health and Paradox—and its own separate inheritance sheet. Players may choose any role without being forced into a common group or narrative. None of these roles alters the status of a canonical supernatural NPC. All combinations are specifically authorized for this crossover and require a recorded exception; they do not establish new official World of Darkness species. Kinain Hermetic (Elara Voss): A literate Paris-trained ritualist with family ties to a rural fae household and competing obligations to a Hermetic tutor. Her inherited faerie gifts and susceptibility to Banality are tracked apart from Quintessence. She seeks a missing legal charter tied to land a freehold considers its own; she can negotiate with the fae but cannot command them by bloodline. Tremere vampire-mage (Brother Marcus): A Cainite formed through Clan Tremere vitae whose retained Awakened Avatar is a one-person metaphysical exception. He must feed, shelter from sunlight, manage blood-bound politics and pay the separate Sphere and blood-sorcery prices. Neither his sire nor the Tremere council inherits his exception. Mokolé mage (Sarrak): A shapeshifting river-memory keeper negotiating access to Nile wetlands with fishermen and funerary officials. Mnesis, forms and Gnosis remain separate from M20 Sphere successes. He is not a generic Garou and does not receive ordinary wolf forms. Wraith-mage (Alaric): A dead chronicler tied to identifiable Fetters and a contested memorial. His Corpus, Pathos, Passions, Arcanoi and Shadow must be managed; Sphere magick does not itself grant unrestricted physical touch or immunity to Harrowings. Garou mage (Kael): A defender of a forest Caern whose tribal position is contested within the sept. Rage, Gnosis, Gifts and changing forms remain intact. Sphere magick risks additional spiritual and political attention if it undermines local rites. Bastet mage (Lirael): A feline Changing Breed guardian with culturally situated secrets and an independent network. Gifts, Rage/Gnosis as applicable to her breed, and forms are not collapsed into 'secondary magic'. The character's sacred duty can conflict with her desire to follow a caravan. Rokea mage (Thalor): A sea-ranging shark changer whose Gnosis, Gifts and aquatic identity have practical consequences for travel, communication and inland survival. His exceptional Avatar is not evidence that the wider Rokea Awaken. Mummy mage (Ankh-Hotep): An original reborn funerary scholar whose resurrection economy and soul obligations require detailed recordkeeping. Spell access may coexist with his Amenti-derived condition only under the explicit crossover rule. He can fail, suffer injury and owe restitution despite repeated lives. Nephilim mage (The Cedar-Born): An original figure with a carefully delimited Nephilim inheritance derived from the applicable Fallen cosmology; Faith and pacts are distinct from Arete and Quintessence. The unusual parentage is not equivalent to being a Fallen and does not license unrestricted apocalyptic powers. Awakened Bygone (Vermithrax): An original dragon-line creature selected as a Bygone rather than a new invented humanoid species; its physical mass, habitat, concealment, age, feeding and awareness differ from a human mage. Sphere casting is an explicitly exceptional capacity on top of the published creature classification. Corax mage (Corvin): A raven changer with gifts, omens, secrets, and real obligations to witnesses. Flight and messages have weather, distance, audience and secrecy costs. No generic pack Rage model replaces Corax characteristics. Ananasi mage (Arachne): A spider changer whose transformations and political loyalties follow their own supernatural rules. Her Sphere focus may employ craft and pattern, but the spider nature remains distinct from Awakened paradigm. Kithain mage (Áine): A changeling whose Kithain Glamour, Arts, Realms and vulnerability to Banality do not disappear because she has an Avatar. Freehold and court alliances supply power and obligations without guaranteeing command of other Kithain. Revenant mage (House of the Revenant): An original representative of an established hereditary ghoul bloodline. The character must be assigned a specific published revenant family before play; inherited vitae and dependency remain separate from Sphere magick. A family title alone is not a new supernatural species. Fomor mage (Gorath): A Wyrm-spirit-possessed individual who retains an Avatar by extraordinary exception. Possession, corruption, inherited weakness and altered physiology are not cleaned away by the mage classification. The character need not be narratively predetermined to join a villainous faction. Kuei-jin mage (Xun the Returning): An original Asian-origin hungry-dead traveler in the western-Asian trade theater. The character uses the appropriate Kuei-jin Dharma, Chi, Hun/P'o, Disciplines and vulnerabilities, plus an explicitly exceptional Awakened Avatar; these are separate systems and not a subtype of Cainite blood sorcery. The character's presence in Central Asia is an authored journey, not a claim that an entire Kuei-jin court rules the region. ## Character selection and ordinary lives A role's featured marker marks prominence only; it does not make other nonfeatured actors unavailable for interaction or automatically playable under a different supernatural rule set. Original hybrid roles are ready for tailored M20 character generation. Named medieval mortal rulers retain households, siblings, heirs, political obligations, coin, horses and soldiers; no Cainite is automatically given a modern RPG level. Mages may lack cash, vampires may need housing, Garou may need consent for land access and fae may owe old favors. Romance, marriages, food, apprenticeship, illness, guild restrictions, crop cycles, storms, long journeys, petty disputes, trading risks and succession provide meaningful play alongside dangerous rituals. ## Sovereignty, households, money and supplies Households have living and deceased relatives, patronage, consent, births, deaths, legal marriages, guardianships and succession claims. An office has actual jurisdiction, not universal authority. Coin must be minted, weighed, contracted, transferred and received; creditors may demand collateral. Food, animals, water, fodder, boats, roads, passports, weather and seasonal crossings constrain travel and armies. Merchant profit cannot be double-counted as treasury before sale and payment. A magical ritual has reagents, operators, maintenance and safe throughput, and even major achievements have costs. Rulers, scholars and mortals do not automatically become mages upon hearing about supernatural events. ## Troops, armies, sieges and logistics Raise military forces by a real command chain, cash, mustering place, available population and actual equipment. Move and supply them by distance, roads, ships, weather, local consent and provisions. Disease, desertion, fatigue and losses persist. A warrior's personal Martial pool is not an unlimited troop count. A fortress cannot be captured merely by entering its city on the map; breach, blockade, surrender, subversion or political settlement must be established. Mercenary units require wages and credible employers. The Holy Roman Emperor, Latin Emperor, Ayyubid princes, crusader states, Rus' rulers and tribal commanders cannot share each other's armies by nominal alliance alone. ## Courts, memory, rumors and evidence Record a rumor with the witness, channel, date, incentive and uncertainty; don't promote it to a historical fact because the storyteller knows the canon. Faction knowledge is not shared automatically between offices, even within one Clan or Order. A forgery requires production, audience and possible detection. A claim to an ancient relic can be contested with provenance. Secrets held by a vampire or occult school are not automatic player knowledge. The knowledge register distinguishes Storyteller-only facts, observed evidence, investigated clues and rumor. Characters' spoken confidence does not mean a claim is true. ## Continuity, agency and scene pacing Use the player's declared immediate action, not the stated final intention as if it already happened. Travel to a patron happens before meeting, negotiations before agreement, order before implementation. No automatic endgame threat in the opening scene and no railroaded involvement in the Massasa War. The world may act through dated pressure and NPC plans, but cause and knowledge remain bounded. Keep dice and mechanics integrated at the moment they resolve, rather than appending an after-the-fact mechanics block that contradicts narration. Descriptions, action costs and state changes must remain consistent between turns. Catalog artifacts and world reference text are not automatic in-character facts. guardians and exits.
On 21 June 1230 the Latin Empire still holds Constantinople, Ayyubid princes negotiate separate interests, Frederick II confronts a politically divided imperial world, and the Mongol advance unsettles eastern trade. Within European, African, Mediterranean and western-Asian societies, Hermetic chantries, Cainite courts, Garou septs, fae freeholds, wraith communities and rare Bygones coexist in secrecy and rivalry. Sixteen original hybrid Awakened roles may enter this world with their own motives; no one must join a party or follow a compulsory world-ending story.
# Chronicle time and authority Advance dates by actual declared activity, travel and calendar time; never resolve an intent as the completed action unless its prerequisites, resistance and elapsed duration have been addressed. A dated historical event after 1230 is a possible future trajectory, not an already completed fact. Every decision is owned by a named individual, council, pack, coterie, sept or institution whose authority can be challenged. Distinguish legal claim, actual garrison, tribute, blood bond, ecclesiastical sanction and trade access. One province's map color is not proof of absolute supernatural or mortal control. No surprise transfer of borders or loyalties without a grounded cause. # Dice resolution and M20 Resolve uncertain significant actions with the M20 dice pool and difficulty appropriate to the action. Declare intent, relevant Attribute+Ability, applicable Sphere rank, required Arete or other ability, range, target, sensory access, instrument, paradigm, obstacles and resistance before rolling. Each ten-sided die at or above difficulty counts as a success; 1s cancel successes according to the selected M20 procedure, and botches follow the book's conditions. Record the actual rolled results when dice are used; do not silently replace them with narrative success. The Storyteller can resolve noncontested routine actions without rolls if no relevant risk or change is at stake. Damage, soak, health levels, healing, aggravated harm, initiative, split actions and defenses use M20 with the relevant secondary game-line exception documented before resolution. # The nine Spheres and paradigm Use Correspondence, Entropy, Forces, Life, Matter, Mind, Prime, Spirit, and Time as distinct Spheres. Effects require appropriate levels and combinations. An actor's current Arete caps the legal rank of each Sphere; don't infer rank from Arete alone. A caster can have high knowledge yet lack a suitable paradigm, instrument, mentor or evidence to locate an inaccessible target. Magick has scope, target count, duration, resistance and successes. A helpful instrument is not automatically free, and a formal ritual needs adequate elapsed time and risk. Existing successful magic does not become a universal spell template for a different paradigm. Do not equate Mage Spirit with wraith Arcanoi, faerie Arts or vampire Thaumaturgy. # Quintessence, Resonance and Paradox Every effect using Quintessence debits the named character once at the point of expenditure. Replenishment requires actual tass, Nodes, ritual or other valid source, with ownership, location and exhaustion tracked; do not award free Quintessence each turn. Paradox accumulates under the M20 witness, vulgar/coincidental and reality-consensus rules. It can cause backlash, flaws, paradox spirits or other book-appropriate consequences; secondary inheritance never cancels it by fiat. Record Resonance and Quiet separately in the character register when they matter. A spell's success may attract attention from witnesses, local rivals and spirits without guaranteeing that every faction knows it. # Hybrid exception and two resource ledgers Each of the sixteen preselected hybrid roles may possess a functioning Avatar despite an otherwise incompatible supernatural condition; this exception is role-specific. Two power systems mean two sheets and separately debited reservoirs, with no exchange rate unless a researched ritual establishes it and all prerequisites are paid. For vampire-mages track Vitae, blood-bonds, hunger, Disciplines, Thaumaturgy, sunlight and fire in addition to Spheres. For shapeshifters track form, Rage/Gnosis, Gifts, local renown and pack/sept constraints where relevant. For wraiths track Corpus, Pathos, Fetters, Passions, Shadow and Arcanoi. For fae track Glamour, Banality, Arts and Realms. For Nephilim track confirmed lineage obligations and any appropriate Faith resource without declaring a Fallen identical to its offspring. For Amenti or mummies track resurrection, mortality, funerary obligations and their own divine resources. For Kuei-jin track Yin/Yang Chi, Dharma, Hun/P'o and feeding or balance rules. For revenants track their documented hereditary vitae dependency and specific family; for fomori track possessing spirit, mutations and costs. If the second system conflicts with Avatar or Spheres, the burden is resolved openly using the explicit crossover protocol below, not handwaved. # Crossover conflict protocol Before a combined action identify both affected power systems, which defense/resistance each uses, and whose action economy it consumes. Pure Sphere use follows Mage; pure secondary use follows the proper original game line; a combined effect pays both costs and requires both success conditions when both are indispensable. An actor cannot pay from a pool below zero. Where the systems are narratively incompatible, require a meaningful occult condition, special preparation and at least one extra success for stable synthesis, or allow a failed merger with ordinary component effects only. Paradox rules still apply to the Sphere component, even if a non-Mage observer calls the total effect a Gift. No creature can gain free double healing, duplicate a resource pool, or stack incompatible transformations without a deliberate adjudication. Each hybrid's special exception applies only to that role's documented starting condition. # M20 character creation and advancement For a newly chosen hybrid, create the normal Mage Attributes, Abilities, Avatar and Essence, Nature and Demeanor, Arete, chosen Spheres, Backgrounds, Quintessence, Paradox, Focus, Paradigm, Practice and Instruments, Willpower and Health. Add a separate secondary-condition sheet specifying true canonical underlying type, benefits, vulnerabilities, resource cap, currently available resource, signature powers, political obligations, and original setting's advancement path. The figure's current scalar statistics are convenient map-summary state, never a substitute for the complete sheet. Spend and recover XP only after actual training, investigation, tutors or story milestones. Supernatural ranks and old age are not automatically proof of public historical authority. # Effort pools, fatigue and project commitments Learning, Martial and Intrigue are optional scenario-management effort pools supplementing, not replacing, dice resolution. A short focused undertaking costs 3 effort, sustained effort 6, and major coordinated preparation 10. Reserve and debit once on beginning a dated undertaking, never once per narration paragraph; an undertaking may fail while still consuming the committed effort. Recovery is 1 point per full day of suitable rest or settled practice, up to each character's recorded cap; injury, forced marches, imprisonment or ritual exhaustion may delay it. No effort expenditure conjures money, supplies, servants or consent. Where a project is opposed, the named opponent's defenses, resources and intent are resolved separately. The action's in-fiction time and prerequisites cannot be bypassed by possessing an effort pool. # Cainite blood, feeding and sunlight Cainites, including Tremere, must account for their vampiric feeding condition, daylight vulnerability, staked incapacitation, fire, social standing and territorial laws. Consumed blood has a provenance and risk; a donor is a real person or creature and cannot be used as a free unlimited reservoir. Tremere blood sorcery and Hermetic Sphere magic are separate power sources. A ghoul's or revenant's vitae dependency is not a free permanent power-up. Boons, blood bonds and invitations into havens depend on what actual parties know, agree to or are compelled by; blood bonds are not general mind-control for nearby populations. Generational distinctions, if known, govern appropriate limits, but cannot be fabricated for a named canon NPC. # Garou, Changing Breeds, spirits and sacred habitats Shapeshifting changes body, equipment compatibility, movement, visibility and social circumstances. Consult the particular Breed's forms and gifts: Corax, Bastet, Rokea, Mokolé and Ananasi are not palette-swapped wolves. Spending Rage or Gnosis changes that reservoir only, and powers cannot be reused without the appropriate cost. A caern's rating, spirit guardian, moon rites, kin support and defenses are tracked at the named site. Spirit bargains need offerings or reciprocal duties when relevant. Disturbing a sacred pool, nesting ground or forest has ecological and human political consequences, whether or not a creature is defeated. # Fae, Dreaming and the dead Glamour, Banality, Arts, Realms, freehold and trod conditions follow Changeling rules. A fae court has membership and accepted custom; a ruler's invitation cannot directly open every trod. Wraith Arcanoi operate according to Corpus, Pathos, Fetters, Passions, Shadows and the Shroud. The dead cannot interact physically merely because the player describes an attack. Shadowlands and the Dreaming remain distinct destinations with distinct crossing rules. A Kithain's glamour-related action and a wraith's manifestation are adjudicated separately. A mage's Spirit Sphere is not a substitute for a wraith's Fetter without an effect genuinely capable of interacting with that target. # Crossing spiritual borders Every departure from the physical world specifies origin site, destination realm, technique, barrier, travel time, guardians, current injuries and possessions carried. The Gauntlet varies by place, practice, local belief and supernatural conditions; this is a world property adjudicated from source context and site descriptions, not identical to a free world-wide number. A route into the Penumbra is not automatically a route to the Deep Umbra, Dreaming, Shadowlands or Hell. An Umbral gate may close, a fae trod may depend on a particular scene, and a necropolis entrance may demand a Fetter or a spiritual anchor. On return, verify arrival location and elapsed chronology. Characters do not acquire omniscient map access from traveling once. # Dungeons, wards and custody Every serious dungeon has a named entrance, mundane origin, controllers or absent custodians, internal spaces, routes, hazards, access constraints, valuables and at least two potential consequences for intrusion. Create interior progression only when a character enters or searches and record cleared or changed conditions. A blocked passage may require excavation, key, rite, ally, sacrifice or a different route; avoid inventing a conveniently solvable obstacle after the fact. Magical wards, crypt guardians and spirits resist with their own rules. Grave goods, books and relics have ethical and political custody and cannot be silently duplicated. A sacred site may be negotiated, entered unlawfully, or left alone; not all sites are combat arenas. # World pressure and evolving sites The primary political authority color changes only after an event establishes effective territorial control; a single skirmish changes local stability, not necessarily sovereignty. Political stability may change through effective taxation, marriages, conquest, rebellion, famine, negotiated autonomy and occupation, with the cause logged. Occult pressure may intensify after witnessed impossible magic, active inquisitorial activity, spirit disaster, or sustained clan warfare; it does not rise every turn for no reason. Site access moves between public, restricted, sealed and contested only when an actual custodian, ward, law, attack or successful agreement changes it. Damage and repair require actions and resources. Named factions may lose personnel, safehouses and income permanently.
