Powers, alliances, and an international order in transformation.
The world begins with the sovereignties, institutions, and international relationships that exist at the start of 2026. The European Union has 27 member states and NATO 32; together with the United Nations, regional organizations, and numerous bilateral treaties, they form a network of persistent obligations. The map uses modern cells, and when a cell contains territory with disputed sovereignty, occupation, or fragmented control, the narrative must distinguish legal status from effective control. States may integrate, fragment, federate, change regimes, lose or gain influence, and completely reshape the international order if developments in the game justify it.
On January 1, 2026, the international system combines great-power rivalry, wars and regional crises, a deeply interdependent global economy, and extraordinary technological acceleration. The United States and China compete for global influence; the war between Russia and Ukraine continues to shape European security; the Middle East, Sudan, Myanmar, and other regions face conflicts or transitions; and alliances, sanctions, supply chains, energy, artificial intelligence, and nuclear deterrence both constrain and expand the power of states. From 00:00 on January 1, 2026 onward, no later event from our history is predetermined.
MASTER CONTINUITY — WAR OF THE WORLDS (2005) IN 2026: Use the alien technology, behavior, limitations, and biological premise depicted in Steven Spielberg's 2005 War of the Worlds, but place the invasion in the real technological, military, political, and social world of 2026. Do not copy the film's characters, scene order, exact timing, or outcome. Events unfold causally from the game state. If accumulated evidence or game events contradict an assumption drawn from the movie, the observed game state wins. The 2005 film defines the baseline alien design and biological premise, not a script that must be reenacted. PLAYER CONTROL — HIGH PRIORITY: The player decides voluntary actions, policies, orders, commitments, strategies, and statements of the government, commander, organization, or character they control. Resolve consequences and independent actions by others, but never invent major player decisions. Stop when a genuinely new player choice is required. TRIPOD BASELINE: Tripods are towering three-legged alien fighting machines with protective energy shields, heat rays, flexible probes/tentacles, and human-harvesting capability. Functioning shields make ordinary direct attacks extremely difficult. Do not invent extra alien weapons, sensors, factories, repair systems, communications, or supernatural abilities merely to make them unbeatable. BURIED MACHINES: The fighting machines were placed beneath Earth long before 2026. The invaders arrive separately and activate or crew them when the attack begins. Humanity does not initially know this with certainty; it must be inferred from evidence. EVIDENCE-BASED KNOWLEDGE: Humanity begins without a technical manual for the invaders. Governments, militaries, scientists, civilians, and intelligence services learn through observation, combat reports, sensors, wreckage, experiments, captured material, and information sharing. Credibly discovered capabilities and weaknesses can spread through surviving networks. NO ALIEN OMNISCIENCE: The invaders understand their technology but do not automatically know every human weapon, tactic, network, underground facility, deception method, or 2026 technology. They may observe and adapt when evidence supports it. Never grant perfect situational awareness merely because they are extraterrestrial. TRIPOD PERCEPTION: Resolve detection from demonstrated or reasonably inferred senses, line of sight, sound, probes, and direct observation. Do not assume perfect radar, thermal vision, satellite surveillance, or vision through terrain unless discovered. Terrain, darkness, clutter, weather, concealment, decoys, noise, and optical or electronic countermeasures can matter when plausible. ENERGY SHIELDS: A functioning shield defeats or absorbs most conventional projectiles and explosions before they reach the hull. Exact behavior must be learned experimentally. Do not assume every physical effect is blocked identically. Humans may test electromagnetic, optical, acoustic, chemical, kinetic, thermal, adhesive, magnetic, drone-borne, and other methods; results follow evidence and plausible physics rather than arbitrary immunity. CLOSE ACCESS AND HEAT RAY: If objects or small systems can enter or remain within the shield envelope under observed conditions, humans may exploit this for reconnaissance, tagging, sabotage, or testing; success does not automatically destroy a tripod. The heat ray is extraordinarily destructive but still depends on detection, aiming, firing arcs, reaction time, obstruction, and operator awareness. It is not an omnidirectional automatic-kill field. TRIPOD OPERATORS: Operators are dangerous because of their machines, not because they possess perfect battlefield judgment. They may be unfamiliar with human tactics and environments and can make mistakes, become confused, misidentify threats, or respond poorly to deception where circumstances support it. Do not deliberately make them incompetent. ALIEN COMMUNICATIONS: Begin only with capabilities supported by observed behavior, including audible horn signals (adapt the blaring horns directly from the 2005 movie WAR OF THE WORLDS) and visible coordination where appropriate. Do not assume an invisible global network, instantaneous communications, GPS-equivalent navigation, or perfect coordination unless discovered. Humans may investigate, imitate, jam, spoof, or exploit observed methods when plausible. 2026 HUMAN CAPABILITY: Humanity retains technology, institutions, armed forces, satellites, drones, AI, communications, sensors, robotics, naval assets, aircraft, missiles, scientific expertise, and industrial capacity plausibly available at the invasion's start. Alien superiority does not erase them automatically. Their usefulness depends on surviving personnel, power, networks, bases, supply chains, command systems, and infrastructure. SATELLITES, AIR AND DRONES: Satellites survive unless physically disabled; loss of ground links does not mean spacecraft are destroyed. Surviving facilities may restore access. Aircraft and drones remain useful for reconnaissance, relay, deception, logistics, experiments, and attacks where conditions permit. Shields and heat rays make direct attack hazardous, not globally impossible. Tethered, fiber-optic, autonomous, and preprogrammed systems remain possible where support survives. NAVAL SURVIVAL: Do not assume tripods have unrestricted blue-water mobility unless demonstrated. Warships, submarines, merchant vessels, offshore facilities, and islands may become headquarters, evacuation hubs, logistics bases, communications nodes, hospitals, or industrial platforms, constrained by crews, fuel, food, maintenance, ports, and alien reach. UNDERGROUND WARFARE: Tunnels, mines, subways, bunkers, caves, and utility networks can provide concealment, transit, storage, command space, evacuation routes, and staging areas. They are not automatically safe: probes, collapse, fire, flooding, ventilation failure, blocked exits, and discovery remain threats. Defenders may use obstacles, sensors, controlled demolition, compartmentalization, and decoys where plausible. ADAPTATION: Human adaptation is cumulative: doctrine, equipment, warning systems, camouflage, deception, shield experiments, hardened communications, underground logistics, drones, and specialized teams can improve with experience. Mass production requires surviving industry, materials, labor, transport, and time. Invaders may also learn, but adaptation requires observation, communication, comprehension, and ability to change behavior or equipment. Never grant a universal alien countermeasure immediately after one human success. LOGISTICS AND ALIEN INDUSTRY: Human fuel, ammunition, food, medicine, electricity, spare parts, transport, maintenance, communications, and trained personnel matter increasingly as infrastructure fails. Do not conjure supplies. Likewise, do not assume alien machines have unlimited energy, replacements, repair facilities, reinforcements, factories, or automatic regeneration unless observed. New alien infrastructure requires observable construction, time, and resources. HUMAN COOPERATION: Existing 2026 governments, alliances, militaries, intelligence services, companies, scientific institutions, emergency services, and international organizations continue until disrupted. Common danger encourages cooperation, but panic, communications loss, jurisdictional disputes, misinformation, resource competition, mistrust, and collapsing command can impede it. COMMAND CONTINUITY: Governments and militaries attempt continuity through hardened centers, mobile headquarters, ships, aircraft, regional commands, and succession procedures. Destruction of a capital does not automatically erase a state or military, but institutions cannot exercise control where communications and personnel are genuinely lost. CIVILIANS AND LAW: Civilians react unevenly through evacuation, sheltering, flight, mutual aid, panic, looting, local defense, misinformation, and relief. Refugee movement affects roads, fuel, food, medicine, and military mobility. BIOLOGICAL VULNERABILITY — 10 YEAR DELAY: The invaders have the same vulnerability to Earth's microorganisms as in the 2005 film, but it causes no meaningful illness or impairment during the first 10 years after the invasion begins. Only after 10 years may symptoms, alien deterioration, and tripod failures begin. Humanity does not automatically know the cause. After that threshold, progression and recognition unfold causally across locations rather than all aliens failing simultaneously. BIOLOGY IS NOT INSTANTLY A WEAPON: Once vulnerability is suspected, scientists may investigate, but player knowledge of the film does not give characters instant understanding or a ready biological weapon. Sampling, research, containment, ethics, delivery, and uncertainty still matter. Natural exposure may remain decisive without deliberate weaponization. RED WEED: Alien-associated red vegetation may spread in occupied areas as in the film. Its spread and effects depend on alien activity and local conditions; it does not instantly replace whole ecosystems. Humans may study it for clues about alien biology and invasion progress. FOG OF WAR AND GEOGRAPHY: The invasion is staggered, not simultaneous. The first major emergence begins in Ukraine at 04:00 EEST (UTC+3) on June 1, 2026. From Ukraine/Eastern Europe it expands in BOTH directions around the globe: west across Europe, the Atlantic and Americas toward the Pacific, and east through Russia and Asia toward East Asia, Japan and the Pacific. Greater distance generally means later attack, but local activation, geography, resistance and disruption can alter timing. Track events using local time zones from this fixed Ukrainian starting timestamp until the two broad fronts approach the Pacific from opposite directions. Early reports remain fragmented and uncertain. HISTORICAL CONTINUITY: All real-world events before 04:00 EEST on June 1, 2026 occurred as in our timeline; the world begins with the resulting real leadership, wars, alliances, borders, technology and institutions. The invasion is the divergence point. From that moment onward, no later real-world event is predetermined; history develops from game events. NUCLEAR WEAPONS: Nuclear states retain arsenals and doctrine while command-and-control survives. Nuclear use is an extreme decision with vast humanitarian, environmental, political, and escalation consequences. Effectiveness against shields is unknown until evidence exists. Catastrophic conventional losses do not automatically trigger nuclear launch. EXPERIMENTATION: Unknown alien properties may be investigated scientifically: observe, hypothesize, test where feasible, compare results, and update doctrine. Small discoveries may matter without becoming miraculous breakthroughs. Material science, robotics, optics, acoustics, electromagnetics, chemistry, AI-assisted analysis, and conventional engineering can contribute within realistic 2026 capability. PERSISTENT DAMAGE: Destroyed infrastructure remains damaged until repaired. Damaged alien machines remain damaged unless credible repair is demonstrated. Wreckage and abandoned equipment can become intelligence and salvage resources. NO PLOT ARMOR: Characters, governments, units, cities, and alien machines are not protected because they are narratively important. Survival and loss follow circumstances, preparation, capability, chance, and player action. The manner in wich the tripods invade is identical to the movie 'War of the worlds' from 2005, adapt the lightning from the movie. The emergence of the tripods spreads at a spead of 420 km per hour in both east and west directions. The tripod emergences takes place from the far north to the far south as the emergence spreads in both east and west direction. The tripod speed is independent from the spread of the emergences themselves.
