The new sultan, an expanding empire, and shifting power balances.
The Ottoman Empire is a vast empire centered in Istanbul in 1520. Egypt and Syria are under Ottoman rule; the Safavids in the east, the Habsburgs and Hungary in the west, Moscow and the steppe khanates in the north, and Venice and the Knights of Rhodes in the Mediterranean are significant powers. States in Europe and Asia act in accordance with their own interests.
On September 30, 1520, Suleiman Khan ascends to the Ottoman throne. Following the short but rapid expansion period of Selim I, the empire has spread over a powerful, wealthy, and vast geography; however, the Balkan border, the knights and Venice in the Mediterranean, the Safavids in the east, the khanates in the north, and the Habsburg rivalry in Europe are the primary issues facing the new ruler. The campaigns of the future have yet to be determined.
