Following the armistice of September 1943, Italy descends into civil war.
In 1943, Italy is divided in two following the fall of Benito Mussolini. In the south, the Kingdom of Italy joins the Allies after the armistice signed with them in September 1943. Italian forces then fight alongside the Allied armies to liberate the country. In the north, Benito Mussolini, freed by a German commando unit, founds the Italian Social Republic (RSI), a state supported and controlled by Nazi Germany. German troops occupy a large part of northern and central Italy and provide significant military support to the RSI. From this date on, Italy is plunged into a true civil war: forces loyal to the Kingdom of Italy and the Allies face off against the RSI, German troops, and anti-fascist partisans. This situation persists until the surrender of Germany and the collapse of the RSI in 1945.
Italy is now divided in two. In the south, the Kingdom of Italy remains loyal to King Victor Emmanuel III and joins the Allied camp following the armistice of September 1943. Italian forces fight alongside the Allies against the Germans and the Italian Social Republic. In the north, Benito Mussolini establishes the Italian Social Republic (RSI) with the support of Nazi Germany. German forces occupy the north of the country and support the RSI in its struggle against the Allies and the Italian forces that remained loyal to the King. The war beginning in Italy will be long and brutal. The Allies are advancing slowly toward the north while German forces and the RSI attempt to hold their defensive lines. It is 1943. Italy is divided. The fate of the country is now in your hands. Good luck.
